Mitchell International Airport in Milwaukee is gearing up for peak travel days during the spring break, with Friday and Saturday expected to see about 11,000 passengers, about 3,000 more than a typical weekday, according to airport officials. Officials say Southwest Airlines is the largest carrier to Mitchell, and Orlando is the top destination for spring vacation travelers this year, with more flights to Tampa, Fort Lauderdale, and Fort Myers. Other popular destinations include Punta Cana, Jamaica and Puerto Vallarta. Officials told WISN 12 News that while the airport is extremely busy during the spring break, it’s unlikely they’ll experience the same long wait times at security as larger airports like Chicago’s O’Hare International Airport, despite a partial federal shutdown that has put TSA agents across the country out of a job due to a lack of pay. “As of today we have not seen anything unusual in terms of wait times at TSA checkpoints,” Harold Mester with Milwaukee’s Mitchell International Airport said Wednesday. “It can get busy early in the morning on those peak days. There are other options, including TSA PreCheck and Clear available at this airport.” The Department of Homeland Security did not include Mitchell International Airport among the list sent to News 12 airports with the largest TSA call-out rates. The head of the TSA at Mitchell Airport told WISN 12 News Friday that the airport has never been affected in the same way that major airports around the country have been. “Locally, here, we’re not seeing the same level of calls. Our staff is pretty consistent. So that’s good news for us,” said Timothy Goldman, Deputy Director of Wisconsin State Security. Officials encourage travelers to arrive at the airport at least two hours before their flight departs and expect longer wait times this coming weekend.
