Delta, Amazon Leo sign agreement to deliver the next era of connected travel and digital experience

Delta will introduce Amazon Leo on hundreds of Delta flights, starting with the 500th flight installed in 2028, and work with Amazon to expand its popular Delta Sync Wi-Fi experiences and customer-friendly seats with personalized onboard connections. The agreement expands the existing partnership between AWS and Delta, bringing even more advanced technology to Delta’s people, customers, and operations and enhancing the airline’s reputation for world-class service.

Delta Air Lines and Amazon – two global leaders driving the future of travel and technology – are launching a long-term partnership to unlock the next generation of technology-enabled travel experiences. The new agreement will bring high-speed, low-cost networking from Amazon Leo to Delta’s aircraft, build on the use of Amazon Web Services (AWS) throughout its operations and provide a new era of connected experiences to serve customers and Delta employees alike.

Delta will use Amazon Leo’s satellite technology to bring fast, unique digital experiences to Delta’s domestic and international flights, such as movies and TV shows, listening to podcasts and audiobooks, staying connected with friends, family, colleagues and more. Amazon Leo’s upload capabilities enable customers to share life moments instantly — from uploading vacation photos and videos in real time to secure announcements or business files after a high-profile meeting — without waiting until they’re seated. The global airline plans to introduce Amazon Leo with the first operation of 500 flights starting in 2028, to promote the Wi-Fi experience with the Internet network of Amazon.

“Delta’s future is global,” said Ed Bastian, Delta’s chief executive officer. “This agreement gives us the fastest and most cost-effective technology available to better connect the world today, and deepens our work with a global leader who shares our ambition to create what’s next – to create an even stronger human connection for our people and our customers for years to come.”

Building on the existing work between Delta and AWS, Delta and Amazon plan to collaborate to integrate AWS, Amazon Leo, other Amazon technologies and AI to improve the customer experience throughout the travel journey.

“We have designed Leo to provide high-speed internet to the billions of people in the world without reliable connectivity, and this agreement with Delta is a great example of the impact and scope of the technology – which brings high-speed in-flight Wi-Fi to the tens of millions of passengers who fly Delta every year,” said Andy Jassy, President and CEO of Amazon. “People increasingly want to stay connected wherever they are in the world, and Leo’s speed and reliability will have a huge impact on businesses, governments and consumers. It will make the in-flight experience that much better, and it will change what’s possible while you travel.”

A GOOD CONNECTION TO HELP ENERGY THE FIRST DELTA TYPE ECOSYSTEM

Delta’s commitment to innovation and digital innovation has a long-standing track record, consistently setting the pace for a rapidly innovating industry.

When Delta first introduced fast, free Wi-Fi for SkyMiles Members at CES in 2023, it defined customer expectations for gate-to-gate connectivity. Delta’s high-speed Wi-Fi is offered free to SkyMiles Members by T-Mobile. Delta has rapidly upgraded the experience on more than 1,150 flights with quality onboard streaming connectivity that now extends to nearly all of Delta’s global network, with clear routes coming online in the fall of 2026. More than 163 million Delta SkyMiles members have connected to Delta Sync Wi-Fi to date, underscoring Delta’s new industry strategy.

Amazon Leo has a similarly bold mission: to provide faster, more reliable internet to consumers than access to existing networks. The system is built around a constellation of thousands of satellites in low Earth orbit around the planet, and connects directly to the global network and infrastructure managed by AWS. Amazon Leo’s aerial solutions are powered by an aircraft-grade version of its most powerful antenna, the Leo Ultra – the fastest commercial antenna ever produced.

Along with existing world-class partnerships with Viasat and Hughes, Delta brings every SkyMiles Member multi-device, low-speed gate-to-gate Wi-Fi. By working with many communications leaders, Delta ensures that it equips the right aircraft with the right technology to serve customers around the world.

Delta has led the industry in bringing in-seat entertainment to customers since 2006, with more than 165,000 screens across its global fleet today. As customers seek more entertainment and connectivity, today’s agreement keeps Delta at the forefront of redefining the customer experience as the airline’s global vision moves forward.

DETAILS OF WORLD LEADERS

Delta and Amazon have a long track record of innovation together, building on the airline’s relationship with AWS as its preferred cloud provider. Since 2020, Delta and AWS have successfully migrated nearly 600 Delta applications to the cloud and accelerated the adoption of new technologies that empower Delta employees to provide better care and superior service to customers throughout their journey.

Amazon is one of the top consumer brands supporting Delta’s global ambitions. As of 2022, Delta has expanded partnerships with leaders such as American Express, T-Mobile, YouTube, Starbucks and Uber. With Delta Sync, brands like Paramount+ and Crunchyroll deliver even more rewarding, in-flight SkyMiles-unlocked experiences.

“This agreement will fuel a sustainable partnership engine that can innovate at scale to keep customers coming back to Delta for years to come,” said Bastian.
