Paying attention to red carpet beauty trends is part and parcel of my job as a beauty editor, and it’s clear that all of the best celebrity looks at awards season had one thing in common – a bold lip. Yes, while you may think of lip liner as being there to define your pout and add some definition, this time it’s about taking a simpler approach to your makeup.
Slightly tousled, and pleasantly muted, it’s makeup artist Nina Park who undoubtedly pioneered this smudged liner look. Known for painting the faces of everyone from Zoë Kravitz to Lily-Rose Depp, her style of creating cool “no makeup” looks that don’t look like they’re trying too hard is her trademark. And bold lips are an example of walking the fine line between looking polished without the finished makeup feeling too perfect.
Even better, while I like to leave a very defined lip for aesthetic reasons (really, it’s very nice!) It’s also appealing because I feel like I have an image to recreate my look at home. As a makeup novice, the fact that matte lips look wearable—and don’t require a steady hand—means this is one trend I can see going from the red carpet to real life with complete ease. Besides, it would look just as good with bare skin and smooth mascara as it does with a full face of beauty.

What Is Blurred Lip Liner?
Known for a slightly blurred lip line, the smudged lip look is very popular right now because of how it creates the appearance of a fuller, brighter pout while still looking understated. “It’s wonderful because it works with how the light hits the face,” he explains makeup artist Emily Wood. “Instead of pushing the color inwards, which can make the lips look smaller, a pale lip tends to add depth around the lips and keep the center of the lips lighter, meaning the lips look fuller, rounder and more balanced.” Wood shows that it is not the same as posting on the internet again. He says: “It talks a lot about following, but improving a little on the lips.”
How to Get the Look
Fortunately, this technique is easy to recreate at home, as the beauty of this fuzzy look is that there’s no need for absolute precision. Wood suggests starting with a lip liner that’s slightly deeper than your natural lip color, a lipstick that’s close to your lip shade and a gloss or cream if you like a smoother finish.
“Start by closing the mouth after your natural shape, and you can improve a little past your natural mouth if you want more volume,” Wood he explains. “Then blend the liner in with your finger or a brush so there are no harsh lines at all.” Finish by applying the lip color of your choice to the outer corners of your lips, leaving the center lighter, then add a lip balm or cream to finish. “The key to this look is blending,” it says Wood.
