What is the level of risk?
The risk level is the Government of Canada’s official measure of the safety and security of a destination, country or region.
The four conditions are:
There are some safety and security issues, or the situation can change quickly. Always exercise caution, monitor local media and follow the instructions of local authorities.
Your safety and security may be at risk. You should consider your need to visit this country, place or area based on family or business needs, knowledge or familiarity with the area and other factors. If you are already there, think about whether you really need to be there. If you don’t need to be there, you should consider walking.
You should not visit this country, region or site. Your safety and security are at risk. If you are already there, you should consider leaving if it is safe to do so.
*Note: “Avoid non-essential travel” and “Avoid all travel” are official advisories issued by the Government of Canada when it assesses that the security or health situation in a country or region poses a significant threat to the safety and security of Canadians traveling or living there. This could be due to a terrorist threat, civil unrest, war, insurgency, natural disaster, political instability or a health emergency. These factors directly affect the risk level assigned to each destination and may also affect travel insurance.
The new maps provide a clear, visual way to quickly understand risk situations. They show risks either by country or region, depending on the situation. This map complements the article on Travel Advice and Tips and improves accessibility for sightseers. They help you interpret the advice of your destination, inform you of the dangers, and ultimately guide you on a safe journey.
