Women’s History Month comes directly after Black History Month, which provides a two-month opportunity to promote and highlight the experiences and achievements of Black women. In the beauty space, this means celebrating the distances we continue to take across skin, body, hair care, makeup and health. Black women’s brands are making strides in representation and creativity. As a result, they have earned permanent spots in our bathroom cabinets and deserve yours too.

According to the Harvard Kennedy School, only 2.4% of all venture capital is spent on women’s businesses. In a 2021 survey that focused specifically on Black women, the percentage was a dismal 0.34%. The apparent gap in support is not in any way indicative of the value of said businesses, of course, but is simply an indication of the disparity in the administration of dispossessed groups that continue to face them. The economy is getting worse, and consumers and product creators are feeling the effects. For this reason, many of us turn to brands and products that we feel are compatible with, and ultimately good for supporting. With so many great brands on the market, it can be hard to sift through them all, and that’s where we come in.

At ESSENCE, Black women’s brands are celebrated year-round, especially in the months of February and March. For beauty editors and promoters alike who try tons of products for their work styles, they’ve come up with a discerning taste of the products that work best for them. Below, find the products we can’t get enough of.

Mecca Pryor, Style Writer

Product: The Rose Ingleton Dark Spot Serum

This product is my nonnegotiable for dark spot treatment, I can’t live without it.

India Espy-Jones, Beauty Editor

Products: EADEM Le Chouchou Lip Softening Balm and PAT McGRATH LABS Dark Star Mascara.

I have about 5 different flavors of Le Chouchou in my bag as we speak. Whenever I’m out and about, it’s like playing Russian Roulette as I dig my hand into my bag to see which one I randomly pick (even though I secretly hope it’s “Boba Bounce”).

Mascara is the one makeup product that I use every day. After curling my lashes, I reach for the Dark Star mascara whenever I want to look like Diana Ross (which is always). I’m a firm believer that wearing a good mascara is all about grooming yourself.

Product: Oui The People Shape Shifter Massage Tool

These days I’m into lymphatic drainage and this app makes it easy to bring that experience into my home! I like to apply my lotion and body oil and go to work. It helps release tension, get the blood flowing, and exhale from head to toe. I highly recommend.

Cierra Black, Assistant Secretary

Product: EADEM Cloud Cushion Airy Brightening Moisturizer

From the story, the packaging, and the quality of the product itself, I will always sing the praises of EADEM. While the lip balms and calming mists are important, the product I’ve always loved is their moisturizer. I’ve written about this moisturizer before, but it’s one of the top three in my rotation. I’m normally a rich moisturizer girl—I like to feel the product on my skin sealing in the moisture. The best thing about this product is that it feels deeply hydrating without being too heavy, so it’s suitable for most skin types.

Product: Skin-Scent Dry Oil Perfume by Worthy Moodeaux

I really intend to build my personal spirit to reflect my inner aura. Lately I’ve been loving Worthy by Moodeaux. I picked it up first because the name appealed to me. I loved the idea of a daily affirmation of my worth wrapped in a veil of vanilla fragrance with notes of white tea, musk and amber. I get so many compliments when I wear it and everyone reminds me to celebrate that I’m always fit.

Stixx Matthews, Assistant Secretary

Product: Oui The People Featherweight Hydrating Body Gloss Oil

This body oil wraps my body in a luxurious, hydrating beauty and the orange blossom scent is the cherry on top of the entire application experience.
