These formulas offer what beauty fans have been looking for lately: velvet skin—slightly dull, light, buildable and long-wearing, all while making skin look like skin. Foundations also have different levels of protection, from light to full protection, and can be built or not. That’s just to say: There are a lot of foundations out there. So what defines the essence of silk, and where does the name come from?
“A silk foundation usually means a formula that feels very light on the skin while creating a smooth and clean finish,” says New York-based makeup artist and hairstylist Stephanie Orsomarso. “Usually the texture is a thin liquid that glides easily on the skin, which is where the metaphor of ‘silk’ comes from.”
Bottom line: Silk foundation “isn’t really a formality,” says Orsomarso, the way matte or full-coverage foundations fall into the category. He adds: “It’s the way people define a certain character and destiny.
When using a silk foundation, you can expect “a natural-looking finish that sits somewhere between satin and shine,” she says. “Coverage is usually light to medium and very buildable, which allows the skin to look like skin, even more, smooth and naturally radiant.” It’s perfect for someone who wants coverage but doesn’t want makeup to feel heavy or look too matte, making it perfect for every face and photo. “This last type is one of my favorite things to use on clients because it looks natural in person and great photos,” Orsomarso adds.
Why Are Silk Foundations Common?
As basic research on silk is rising, it is clear that makeup trends are changing, and makeup wearers are looking for a very special look. “There’s a big shift right now toward natural-looking, skin-friendly makeup,” says Orsomarso. “My clients are always asking for skin that looks healthy and glowing instead of a heavy, full-coverage matte finish.” Silk foundation does exactly that, yet you still enjoy a long-lasting formula. There’s no need to compromise on performance when it comes to these silk-style foundations.
These types of silk “are perfect for this style because they tend to darken and smooth the skin without looking thick or cakey,” says Orsomarso. “Basically, you still get protection where you need it, but the overall effect feels fresh, light and natural, which is what people are looking for right now.”
Who Can Use Silk Foundation?
The good news: The answer is almost everyone. “Silk foundations tend to work well on many skin types because most of these formulas include hydrating ingredients or skin care ingredients that help the foundation sit well on the skin,” says Orsomarso. “They usually don’t emphasize texture the way other matte formulas can.”
Even if you have oily skin, you can still wear silk foundation as long as you prepare the skin properly and use a setting powder. “I usually recommend setting areas that tend to shine throughout the day so the finish stays even,” she says.
Many wonder if a silk foundation is good for mature skin, and it absolutely is. “For more mature skin, silk foundations are usually one of my first choices when it comes to coverage,” says Orsomarso. She likes it for most mature skin types because “the texture tends to smooth over the skin rather than sitting on it, which helps keep skin looking soft, fresh and natural,” she says. She uses it for a natural-looking coverage on mature skin, so if someone likes something a little more radiant, the radiant finish will be the best.
