When approaching spring wardrobe ideas, I doubt I’m the only one who wants to keep things simple. Even though I’m a dressy person, I’m poor on time, and I want to get dressed, to get on with my day, but I know it all works together.
As a self-proclaimed maximalist when it comes to prints and colors, I’m also guilty of taking joy in simplicity, but as we head into the new season, I’m experimenting with three color rules to see if toning it down can make mornings that much easier.
The 3 color rule for a simple, stylish outfit
The three color rules include neutrals and your accent colors, so in theory it should make dressing easier. In fact, you still have to ask yourself which color suits me?’ and know how your spring wardrobe colors work together, but once you’ve done that, the rest is a jigsaw puzzle.
Dividing your percentages
60% of your look is mostly your base color, for example, it could be black jeans and a black top, which is the biggest part of your outfit.
Next, you choose your 30% color, this color can be a complementary or contrasting color, but actually it will be your blazer, as that main color will take up a third of your look.
And finally, you choose the third color, 10% of the accent. This can be in the form of shoes and a belt, to add a little contrast and interest to your appearance, but this color takes the smallest part of your ensemble, so it is usually done with accessories.
I’ve put together some outfit ideas below to help explain the three color rules and why they’re the easiest way to dress this year.
1. Neutral: 60% Black, 30% Tan, 10% Green
If you want to wear black without looking strong, then adding a color, even if it’s just something neutral, is a quick way to do this. In this view I used black as 60% of the color, before I used a neutral color – tan, as 30%. This means I have room to add a tan belt to the look, while keeping this neutral hue as a secondary tone.
For my 10% color, I added green, again, it’s a very limited, bold use of color, and you can add a coordinating green belt, or gold and green jewelry, while keeping within the 10% bracket.
When it comes to the bag, I would keep it to your main color, in this case, black, to ensure that your outfit looks good. This use of the rule of three colors is especially good for those with black or dark clothing, as it brings out subtle colors without feeling too bright.
Reiss
Double breasted blazer
Layering a jacket over a black tee and jeans still keeps this cover close to 30% of your look. Remember that percentages are approximate to help you balance the look, but are subject to change.

John Lewis
Organic Cotton Short Sleeve Crew Neck T-Shirt
To create a base layer under the jacket, the dark panel also provides a seamless color that will help your silhouette to appear longer and leaner.

Sienna Leg Leg Jeans

Viviaia makes some of the most comfortable shoes and the brand excels in using colors and prints alongside its unique woven construction.
2. Classic: 60% White, 30% Navy, 10% Red
When the weather is warm, white ensembles are gradually entering our daily wardrobes and whether they are white jeans, or like this, a white skirt, using white or cream since your 60% can be more fun than another plain look.
Here I chose a full skirt with a scarf tie belt. In addition to this I went for a Breton stripe top which helps to bring my 30% navy hue, which I emphasize with a nice cardigan. This student is decorated with white details, keeping 60% white in the look, before printing with a red background, for 10% of the third color.
You can add navy or white shoes here, or even two-tone navy and white pumps to complete the look.

Details provided by Slim Fit Cardigan
Beautifully elegant, almost fifty years old, this beautiful cardigan is the perfect cover for spring. The navy hue means it will work with any color, although I think it would look great with denim or white in particular.

Boden
Boden Olivia Breton Stripe Top, Navy / Camel
Breton tees are classic, and Boden British clothing makes some of the best. Adding a jacket or cardigan over a colorful tee is a great way to break the pattern and create a slimming midsection.

MANGO
A Line Skirt With Hatuku Detail
Scarves have a big time, but instead of tying them in your hair or around your neck, using them as belts to add interest to the waist is probably the main way to work this style. This soap does the hard work for you.

Lauren
Mini Blaike Nappa Leather Shoulder Bag
White, navy and bursts of red are probably one of my favorite palettes for the year. With a subtle nautical feel, this red bag really pops against the navy and white and elevates the whole look.
3. Bold: 60% Pink, 30% Blue, 10% Black
But the 3 color rule doesn’t just work for adding a pop to neutrals, it works for any situation where you want to wear a color well, and that includes when you want to be bold, but don’t want a monochromatic look.
In fact, the 3 color rule is perfect for making sure loud clothes feel good instead of confusing and you don’t have to tone it down either. This dress is around 60% light coral pink, both in the form of the dress and the bag.
The 30% is given by a beautiful sky blue blazer, which looks like a polished jacket, and it looks amazing with this bright pink, but to calm down and tone down the whole outfit, my 10% will be soft cream loafers inside the jacket and add “quietness” to the outfit.

ZARA
Pair a Linen Blazer With Dropped Heels
A linen blended blazer is a great jacket choice for tribal dates or wedding guest wear. This pleasant blue color moves between a bright and neutral color and will combine effortlessly with other calm shades as well as shoutier tones.

ME+EM
Fit + Flare Midi Dress
With the boucle fabric, I think this zip front dress is really cute. In a Chanel-inspired look, the tailoring is effortless, and the flared skirt silhouette helps slim the waist. Patch pockets add a fun finish.

PASQ
Sleek Soft Bag with Crossbody Strap in Bright Pink
When I’m down to that 60% of my original, original color, I’ve added a coral pink bag. The whole dress is a high and bright way to dress for a wedding this summer, and this small tote bag is perfect for the essentials.

MR
Leather Trim Block Heel Loafers
When it comes to spring/summer shoe trends for 2026, loafers are perfect, and they add a certain relaxed, yet polished finish to any look. I like the feel of a men’s shoe more than a woman’s pink outfit, and I think this M&S pair can go from AM to PM.
The three color rules are not the only way to wear colors this season, it is probably the easiest way to combine clothes without much thought and effort. Having a set of perimeters for what they meet will give you some perspective, and will help prevent you from adding too many details that can end up looking sloppy.
Although the ‘rule’ works out to be a 60-30-10 ratio, there is obviously a slight variation within that, and this is not an ideal ratio. It’s just a suggestion that most of your outfit should be one color, then have a second color and decoration, and following this will allow you to create a simple and cohesive look. And it’s not just your clothes that can benefit you; the 60-30-10 rule applies internally as well.
Whether you like maximalist colors like me, or you prefer to keep things pared-back, the beauty of this system is that it is really translated into whatever you choose the palette is; the spring dress has improved.
